Mercedes waited with Vince for twenty minutes. Then thirty. She looked over at the Chief Commander.
"I don't think that little girl is going to slow down," Mercedes observed casually. Good to see someone with stamina. Didn't mean the girl was right for the job, but a good start, none the less. "You might be here a while."

"Mmm..." Vince's eyes narrowed. It was a good start, he would give her that. The truly impressive that had gone through the program had ran for longer, though. That being said, he couldn't let her keep running when everyone else had dropped out. He sighed in disgust.
"She's dating my godson," he said offhandedly and then strode out to the track. "Get up!" he barked, "And Zizzy-- stop running and get your ass over here. That was pathetic," he continued in a growl. Everyone scrambled madly to get to their feet, some tripping dizzily in the process.

He was just as hard as he said, which was comforting in a way. At least you always knew where you stood (at the bottom with vast room for improvement, always). She came to stand with the others, one or two who shot her nasty looks, not appreciating being shown up by a young woman like that.
But they'd just have to deal. It wasn't like they wouldn't beat her hands down in other areas. Zizzy would catch up though, she'd maybe get Armand to help her; he'd done this already. Getting paid while training was wonderful news---she hadn't been expecting it and it meant she might be able to move out sooner than she'd thought.
All the recruits managed to recollected themselves in a matter of minutes, none of them were so horribly out of shape. At least she no longer stuck out as the only one not panting. It was almost embarrassing. That awkward sensation of knowing an answer when known of your classmates do.

-ooc: *sigh* can't sleep...-
Mercedes eyes widened at what he'd divulged. So this was that Zizzy. The one who'd got the guy who stepped all over Aunt Isea's heart. Mercedes scowled a little at the memory of her very much despondent friend. She was sorely tempted to bully this girl, but her high principles simply wouldn't allow it. Okay, maybe a little bullying.
"Too true," Mercedes chimed in, following Vince over to the new recruits and probably surprising him with her participation. "Doesn't look like you have anyone up to the task this year, Chief. You should probably send them all home now and save yourself some time."
She tried very hard to be cavalier, but Mercedes simply wasn't an actor by nature. She looked like she was trying and she didn't sound at all believable. She sounded rather chipper, actually. The complete and opposite effect from what she'd intended. Still, she was having fun egging them on and an insult was an insult whether convincingly delivered or not. She spared a long look just for Zizzy. Nothing burned worse than being singled out from the crowd, Mercedes recalled.

Vince observed the slight alienation of Zizzy, but didn't comment. The best were usually singled out, either hated for it, or admired at a distance. He slid Mercedes a calculating look as she chimed in, mildly surprised at the uncharacteristic behavior. The hard stare directed at Zizzy did not go unnoticed. Probably, this was all connected in some way he should know about, but Vince did not waste time keeping track of all the soap operas buzzing around.
"That's alright," he said in response with a cold smirk. "I find a certain pleasure in watching them slowly die off. Every morning when you arrive fifteen minutes prior to five, you will run for two hours." He paused, and then glanced at Mercedes. "Anything else, Detective, before I run them through drills?"

Zizzy faltered a little under the hard stare from the woman. She didn't think she'd done anything wrong---not even Vince had glared at her, specifically, like that yet. Maybe she was misreading it? Zizzy looked away and focused on the mummy. It wasn't like she'd ever been good at reading people. Maybe the girl just had sun in her eye or something.
A two hour run was kind of nothing, at least to her, but the early hour was still a little daunting. No one groaned, no one here was naive enough to expect this to be easy, and if they were, no one was stupid enough to show it.

Mercedes put a finger to her lips in play thoughtfulness. She really wasn't much of a drill sergeant, but she was having fun all the same and she hadn't gotten the 'back off' signal from Vince yet.
"I seem to remember having to memorize the handbook. Did we drop that practice?" she asked. It was a slight fudging of the truth. They'd only had to memorize pertinent paragraphs. Mercedes had been the over-eager brat that read the entire thing.

He raised a slow eyebrow and then did the mental equivalent of a shrug, turning back to the newbs. "Of course. I assumed they already knew, in fact, already had it memorized."
An expression of panic rippled through the group and there was a moment of shuffling and murmuring until Vince's glare hardened and they fell to silence once more.
He turned back to Mercedes, quieter, "Do you have any demanding cases tomorrow morning?"

It was Mercedes turn to be surprised.
"No, ningunos," she replied. She looked to him to ask whatever it was he'd wanted to.

He smirked. "We're doing demonstrations tomorrow, so they see first hand what they'll be learning. You're one of our best marksmen."
