If she'd said, "Me!" and laughed really loud in his face, like, Ha ha, how funny would that have been? he probably would have been able to brush it off. But she seemed so quiet, so embarrassed.
"Hey, relax," he said with an easy grin. "I would have rather kissed you. You don't have a boyfriend to beat me up with afterward."
They reached the top of the stairs and shrugged. "Yeah, I guess. He wasn't very happy, but I explained, and blamed it all on me. I think if Zizzy would have kissed me back, he would have been pretty pissed off, but as it is, he's used to me doing stupid things."

She still didn't look at him. Being told he'd rather have kissed her because she didn't have a boyfriend wasn't exactly comforting. "First room on ze left." She murmured. At least she'd said the truth and he hadn't really seemed to clue in. Men were usually kind of dumb about these things anyways. Especially ones that were already attached to someone else.
"Just drop me on the bed."

"Drop you, right." He rolled his eyes and set her gently among her pillows. He frowned down at her uncharacteristically mute expression, placing his hands on his hips.
"Come on. Would you let it go already? Having me at your beck and call all night would have been funny, I admit." He knelt down beside her, tipping his head sideways so she was forced to meet his eye. "I get it. And it's fine, okay?"

Unbidden, tears pricked her eyes and she turned away from him again. Even though lying flat caused the least pain, she turned on her side, putting her back to him. "Oui, fine." She muttered sarcastically. Not that she wasn't grateful for his forgiveness, but it wasn't exactly like he understood, either.
"No one's forcing you to stay." She snapped, "Ze doctair izn't going to come check on you. You can go."

Girls. Who could understand them? He felt like tossing his hands into the air in defeat, storming out with a resigned, "Fine!" But instead, he grit his teeth and glowered at her, holding his ground. Tears were so unfair. How dare she pull that advantage?
"No," he replied, crossing his arms over his chest with finality. He sat their in quiet frustration for a few moments before his hard look softened. "Look, I'm sorry." He wasn't sure what he did, but he hadn't meant to make her cry.

She laughed, a sound that was more made out of exasperation than humor. She flipped onto her back slowly and shook her head. "It's not your fault." And it wasn't. He wasn't doing it intentionally, making her like him. Marie couldn't understand why he didn't leave, but it was probably because she was telling him too. She could call snow white and he'd argue that it was black.
What was she supposed to say anyways? 'Stop being so nice to me'? She brushed her tears away and plastered on a very convincing smile. "I'm fine."

His mouth dipped into a crooked smile and he hoisted himself further onto the bed, until he sat at her side. "Well, Frenchie, I don't really believe you," Not about her being fine, and not about it not being his fault (everything was always his fault), "But I'm staying. At least for a little while." He shrugged and glanced at her from the corner of his eye. "We're friends, yeah? Against all odds. And I feel bad. I shouldn't have taken you to Real World on your first day." He cringed slightly, remembering his bike, still laying under the dirt.

Marie was tired. Physically, emotionally, and simple tired of trying to get him to leave. Since he'd probably be gone by the time she woke up, she nodded and letting out a small whimper, she wriggled under the covers.
"Well I should not 'ave made you chase aftair some twig." She still wasn't that fond of Zizzy. Although in the long run, having Zizzy be the one to have kissed Alex had probably saved her friendship with Alex. "Before you leave, would you remember turning on ze radio? Just low. I like to 'ear voices." So her big house didn't feel so empty.

He frowned slightly at the jibe at Zizzy, but now wasn't the time to strike up anything hostile, and if she didn't like Zizzy, it was her choice. A lot of girls didn't like Zizzy simply because she'd taken Armand off the market.
"Sure," he said softly. The silence would trumpet in a big house like this. Not like the little crypt he and Nellie shared, where they could hardly walk without bumping into each other. And the castle was big, but it was filled with his 'stand out and look at me' family.
He grabbed the blankets and tucked them in around her shoulders. "Man, do you owe me," he said.

Marie had to hide her face again so he wouldn't see the sweet gesture of tucking her in had brought the tears back. Having him here was nice. Her house was big, and except for her maid, who was literally a ghost, always empty. But Alexander seemed to chase away the loneliness that lay around the place like a fine layer of dust.
"I know." Her voice heavy with emotion, but he probably wouldn't pick up on it, or attribute it to something else.
"Zank you."

"Sure," he said again, with an affectionate chuck under her chin. She really wasn't bad at all when she wasn't warding everyone off with that thick snobbishness. Then again, he kind of liked her haughty attitude.
"I'll come back and check on you, okay?"

She'd be very surprised if he stepped foot here again, but she smiled and nodded, "Zat would be nice." Marie was sentenced to bed rest for a while (not that she'd heed the suggested two months), and she was sure Genn and Sam would come see her. Just as she was sure they wouldn't have quite the same warming effect Alex did.
Her eyes fluttered shut and she was asleep with in moments. Marie had wanted to fall asleep while he was still here, so that his presence lasted longer.
