"And no one did. He didn't exactly succeed, did he?" She attempted to smooth away the tick with her thumb, leaning forward to press her forehead to his.
And her heart went out to him. He really did think it was only a matter of time before she left. And she had to admit, she'd threatened it enough, and it was partly her fault. She'd been packing to leave not ten minutes ago. "Vince, I'm sorry. I'm not going anywhere. I promise." No matter how bad it got, she'd seen his worst. "I didn't mean to make you question that. I just, seeing you with her...him, I don't know. It made me sick."

"You handled it better than I would have," he admitted dryly. "If I'd walked in on you, he would already be dead."
He brought up a hand around the back of her neck, holding her in place. He gave his equivalent of a sigh, the tiniest exhalation of air over his lips. "You didn't make me question it. I've always thought that," he said. "It doesn't matter."

She let out a small chuckle. Not that she doubted him, but it had taken all her self control, and she had very little of it, to keep from hurting that woman very badly.
"It does matter. I'm. Not. Going. Anywhere." Her eyes sank closed. "You don't understand. I can't. I've seen you at your worst. I don't care. I love you." It bothered her that he thought he had such a tenuous hold on her. It made Mary wonder how much restraint he'd been using just so she'd stay.

He hesitated before saying, very, very quietly, "I love you too."
She had seen him at his worst, and what she hadn't witnessed in person, she knew about, and she was still here. And she cared enough to be affected if he kissed another woman.
"I'll mess up again," he said, "And eventually, I might go too far."

Her heart warmed and she smiled and she stroked his cheek. She might be the only person in the entire universe who thought he was adorable, but it didn't matter. It meant she didn't have to share him with anyone else.
"Vince, that's just part of being together. I'll mess up too, I'll go too far. We'll get furious at each other. I just destroyed some of your books, which I know you care about. And if you ever kiss anyone else again..."

Hn. Relationship... things.
He wouldn't pretend to understand. He knew he loved her, and he believed that she, against all odds, loved him too. And he was a little ticked about the books, but he was just glad she wasn't leaving. That, according to her, was being together.
"Okay," he said with a soft smirk, before kissing her.

Mary leaned into him, enjoying the warmth of the moment compared to the pain she'd felt when she'd thought he was cheating on her. It took her a moment to realize that all that kiss had implied wasn't true. He didn't disregard their relationship, and she didn't disgust him.
He'd even, for the first time, said 'I love you' back. "Okay." She repeated in a mumble against his lips.
