Cal stared at her for a long moment before breaking out into a surprisingly cold smile. "And so when your real boyfriend gets out I just have to step back and let you go and never mention it again?" He didn't know if he liked that so much. Calcifer wasn't sentimental, but he did not appreciate having restraints put on him instead of the other way around.
"And what if I get bored of you before then?"

"Yup. That's about right." Somehow, she had a feeling that Calcifer would not be all too keen on this agreement. "And, I was actually kind of hoping that ya'd get tired of me before then, so ya wouldn't care when we had to break it off. Annoyed, tired, bored. Whatever, but I know that ya won't want me for even half the time I'm available. Whenever you're done, you're done. No hard feelin's." Cherry was dead serious as she proposed this, but a smile crept onto her lips soon after. Jokingly, she added, "Come on. Even I can't stand my voice sometimes. I understand."

"Don't kid yourself Cherry, I wouldn't care either way. You're cute and all, but I don't really see why Brolly would want to marry you." He moved away from her, feeling angry and feeling like he had to get control of himself before he completely wrecked their friendship. Getting a glass he poured himself some amber liquid and threw it down quicker than he'd made it.

Cherry had to press her lips together to keep from gasping. Whoa, low-blow. "You're saying things specifically ta upset me. That was really uncalled for. If ya don't like what I'm peddlin, all yas had to do was say. Jesus H."
She was really offended. Really. Cal knew-- he knew-- that her unmarried status was a sore spot for her. He had to have known. It was obvious, wasn't it? "And, though it may shock ya, he wants to marry me because he loves me. We love each other. Real love, too." she protested, though proposing a relationship with another man did seem to contradict that statement a little.

Cal grimaced and sucked back his anger. It wasn't worth it, was it? He was getting what he wanted, and he'd just make sure to cut it off long before she did so that he could leave with his pride intact.
"I'm sorry, Cherry. It's just not exactly what a guy likes to hear. That he's got a certain amount of time before he's kicked to the curb like he don't even matter."

Cherry rolled her eyes, but only a little. "Oh, come on. If ya didn't matter, we wouldn't even be havin' this conversation in the first place and you know it."
But, he did say sorry. And it did sound pretty much sincere. And she sort of did expect that it would hurt his pride. "That's okay. I mean, you took that surprisin'ly well. I'm proud of ya, kid."

It was Cal's turn to roll his eyes, but only a little. He didn't like being talked to the way she was talking to him, and with his temper barely under control, he was having a hard time remembering why he even wanted this.
"Certainly you'll have no right to expect fidelity." He said coldly, as though going over another business contract with her.

Cherry tried not to visibly wince. The cold, bluntness of the question hurt—almost literally. To expect fidelity would be unjust, and she knew it, but she couldn’t help but hope for it. No one likes to have their someone have someone on the side, even their someone was on the side themselves. But she smiled and said, “Certainly not. That wouldn’t be very fair.”
Besides. What did she care if he had some Jane on the side?

Calcifer's grin was about as warm as the hunk of ice that ripped a hole into the Titanic. "Then we have an understanding. Was there anything else you ran over here for?"
His pride was hurt, not his feelings, clearly, but either way he wasn't exactly feeling kindly towards Cherry at the moment. He'd get over it and take advantage of her offer in a bit, but not just yet.

Cherry gave up on her forced smiling and instead just scowled at the jar of Fear in her little paw. "No. That's...it," she muttered as she adjusted her jacket and made for the door. Her hand hesitated on the doorknob. Her angry, Irish blood would not let her leave without a last snarky comment.
"If I need ta sign fuh this, can I do it latah? I don't got a pen on me."
The flapper spared a half-angry half-sad glance over her shoulder before making herself scarce.
