It was not like she expected Vince to remember, but that wasn't the point. The point was that she wanted to thank him for putting up with her when she had been at her most annoying. She didn't often express her gratitude towards the mummy for (grudgingly) taken her in oh-so-long ago and tonight was the perfect time to do it, since it was technically their 'Anniversary'.
She'd gone all out, really. Sneaking out of the Circus to bring back some Egyptian food (a gazelle steak, some good Egyptian Wine, and for desert, something the restaurant had called Kahk Bi Loz) and had set it up at a table for one (like he'd want her to join him) in a separate tent.
Lastly, she'd tucked a wrapped present under his chair, which contained a latin book of war epics. She didn't know if he'd like it really, but she'd tried. Lastly there was a card tucked under the bow, all it said was "Thanks for putting up with me."
Mary went to his tent and called out his name, somewhat excited even though he would more likely then not throw it all back in her face.
"C'mon Vince! I have something to shoooooow you."

He sighed, debating on whether or not to develop a sudden hearing problem. After a moment, he grudgingly left his precious tent and held open the flap of the door, glaring out at her.
He hesitated, studying the luminous glow to her features. He couldn't fathom what had her so excited, and he didn't really care. Though, it looked like he was going to be dragged into it whether he wanted to or not.
"What?"

She grinned at him, "I've got a surprise for you." She said beckoning at him with a pleading expression on her face. It was only a short walk away since she was sure if it had been too far off it would've been a lost cause.
"It won't take long and I promise I'll leave you alone." She practically hopped with excitement to the nearby tent and pulled back the flap revealing the romantic candle-lit dinner for one. "Happy anniversary." She beamed.

His eyes narrowed suspiciously, not sure if he wanted to know, but he followed her despite himself. She looked excited enough to burst out in chicken pox.
He looked at the meal, not getting it at first. Happy Anniversary? Their anniversary? What anniversary! After a long, stretched pause, he blinked and said, "I don't.... understand."
He stepped closer, examining the food. Egyptian Wine and Kahk Bi Loz? It was... impressive, really. He hadn't seen the present or note yet. "Why?"

Mary sighed. "Just eat it, okay? This is the day I first came to the Cirque." She crossed her arms over her chest, looking suddenly defensive. If he started to reject this she was going to force feed him. "I just wanted to, alright? Please just eat the stupid food."
Mary had gone through a lot of trouble and although she had been half-expecting him to reject it, but honestly. It was just food and a small gift. "And I didn't expect you to remember so don't feel bad." She snorted to indicate what she thought of Vince feeling bad about anything.

He couldn't help but smirk at her sudden shift in attitude. "Or what? You'll force feed me?"
Ha ha.
"It's nice."
The earth may have shaken, but that's right folks, it was an intentional compliment.
He raised an eyebrow, looking at the singular chair. "You're not joining me?"

Mary almost did a double-take, smiling widely. That was not what she'd been expecting. But it was a pleasant surprise. She shrugged, "I thought you'd be grumpy enough. I've got my food somewhere else, see? I'll leave you alone and you can enjoy a nice meal in peace."
She was trying to placate him, because even if he'd complimented her, he probably would've been pissed if there had been two chairs, what with the size of the table and the candles and everything. Mary had meant it as a joke, you know, since Vince was in love with himself.

"Hn." Fine by him. He certainly wasn't going to invite her to share a nice meal with him. He twitched a little at the implication.
"Whatever." He focused his attention to her again. "You didn't have to do this. Seriously." He raised an eyebrow in his so-don't-do-it-again face.

Since he didn't look like he was going to figure it out on his own, she approached his chair and kicked his gift out from under it gently, before bending down to pick it up and handing it to him. "Don't say anything. Just don't." She growled. This was going pretty much how she planned it.
"And this was the first year I thought of it, but it was fun. So don't give me that look, you can look forward to this again next year since you still won't tell me when your birthday is."

He sighed irritably, taking the gift. But. He didn't say anything.
He unwrapped it and took out the book, studying the cover for a moment before his eyes gleamed with what on any other face might have been called delight. She knew him well.
He finally noticed the card and flipped it open with one finger, reading the brief message.
All this gratitude was starting to make him feel uncomfortable. It's not as if he treated her that well. A beat passed and then he raised his eyes. Thanks for sticking around was what the appropriate response should have been. As it was, he wasn't sure what to say, exactly.

Mary sighed. She hadn't been expecting a hug or anything so drastic, but total silence wasn't exactly what she'd been hoping for either. Although it was Vince. She should be used to it by now. She patted his shoulder gently, "Happy anniversary." She said again with a grin and left the tent, closing the flap behind her to leave him in peace.

An hour or so later, he emerged from the tent. He'd actually enjoyed himself, flipping through the book while he enjoyed the classic Egyptian meal.
He started to return to his one tent, and then paused, changing direction and walking to Mary's instead. He entered without knocking and watched her do her ab routine for a few minutes, inwardly critiquing her technique. But, for once, he kept his mouth shut.
"Thank you," he said, knowing she'd hear him.

Instead of a gracious thank you, or anything of the sort she raised an eyebrow at him.
"Spit it out. What am I doing wrong?" He didn't ever not have something to say about the way she was doing it. "Oh, it was nothing." She replied, belatedly, to his thanks. It hadn't been nothing but it didn't really matter. She grinned at him.
"C'mon, I know your dying to correct me."

Glad she didn't make a big deal out of his thank you, he smirked, crossing his arms over his chest.
"You're letting your lower back curl." Barely, but, he expected perfection. "Some of the pressure gets transferred to your hips, minimalizing the resistance to your stomach muscles. And you could go slower. More control."

Mary stuck her tongue out at him. She may have asked for it but he was being just plain picky. "Like you do any better." It was just to bother him, because of all people, Vince demanded perfection most from himself.
"You know, it wouldn't kill you to make a mistake once in a while." She said and stood up stretching her arms above her head.
