Samantha saw Genn first and offered a quick wave, which froze halfway through, hand still in the air, when she saw David. Her stomach did an odd plunging trip, and only her friend on her arm moving forward without her kept her from turning heel in the other direction.
She got over her surprise quickly enough. She had told Genn she should date David, and if she'd taken her advice, she shouldn't have a spasm attack over it.
And then Marie kissed him.
Shock, first, and then anger, a crawling, jealous sort of rage, and then hurt. I can't be attracted to girls. What a joke. Her face hardened into stone, and when at last Marie pulled away, her eyes were sharp as carving knives. "You set this up," she said accusingly, the words tainted with ice. "And why? So you could kiss him in front of me? All that effort to... to..." She bit off the words, worried she might, pathetically, cry in front of both of them.
Her chin tilted self-importantly. She wouldn't let this get to her, or affect her, and she certainly wouldn't miss a fine meal over it. She marched over to the chair next to Genn and sat down, lips stretching into a pleasant, entirely fake smile. "I guess I was wrong," she said. Apparently, Marie would get somewhere with it.

“Oh, Marie, Samantha!” Genn called, in faux-surprise, “I wasn’t expe—“
She bit off the end of her sentence, leaving her lips open in a rather inelegant expression of shock. Why, oh why, did Marie have to be such an instigator? Exasperated, she cradled her head in her hands for a moment. “I…I didn’t suggest he wasn’t. I said it was an awkward, fake kiss,” she corrected, giving Marie a rather cross look. So much for their Awesome Cute GoodFriend Plan to Reunite True Love.
Genn couldn’t even bear to look at either Samantha or David; she instead focused on watching the bubbles gather around the straw in her lemonade. Why did she even bother planning anything anymore?

"Bien non, Cherie. It waz an attempt to get you two back togethair, but you were adamant in how little you cared about 'im. I didn't zink it would bother you."
She had to commend Samantha, she got that fake smile in place rather quickly. "I seem to remember you giving ze go ahead." She knew she was being horribly catty, but she was mad.
David on the other hand, was trying to make sense of everything. At first, wonderfully almost, Sam had actually seemed upset about him kissing someone else. Which meant maybe she still liked him? But then Marie started talking and it was kind of a blow. Oh.
Right, why would she care? She'd probably just been surprised. "We didn't plan it." He mumbled, or at least, he hadn't. Why did life hate him so very much?

Samantha's hands clenched into fists in her lap. Sometimes, she really, really, really didn't like Marie. She'd been content to suffer through a tense, awkward meal, but the faux-aristo just couldn't let it drop.
And, to her own chagrin, she was rising to the bait. "I never said I didn't care about him," she snapped. "I said it didn't go anywhere and that," she shot an icy look at David, "was no fault of mine. So, yes, by all means... go ahead." She attempted to crack the fine china of her plate with her eyes alone, her cheeks flushed the color of strawberries.

“Ladies, please,” Genevieve pleaded, trying to grab control of the situation. She handed Samantha her menu and gave David’s to Marie. Since the original ‘get Samantha and David alone together and ditch’ plan probably wasn’t going to be so brilliant now, she’d have to use her inherited acting skills and improvise and she’d definitely have a word (civil, of course. Genevieve was the nice one, after all) with Marie later. “Can we just eat lunch and act like friends should? Please?”

David was only currently friends with Genn, it seemed, so he wasn't entirely sure how he was supposed to pull this off. He was seriously contemplating running away the moment he had the chance, but the look Samantha shot him wanted to make him fix things.
"Samantha..." He didn't understand himself half the time, how was he supposed to explain himself to her? "I...can't. Couldn't....I don't know anymore." Things had been different recently, as his kiss with Marie proved.
Maire simply blew a kiss to Samantha and then perused her menu boredly. "I can be civil. Eet's 'er I'd be concerned about."

"Fine by me," she muttered, snatching the menu from Genn's hand and using it as a shield to block her from David and Marie's view. And then David spoke, and she slapped the menu back down on the table, glowering across the pretty centerpiece at him.
"You can't?" she repeated. "You just did! And you didn't even say goodbye, or tell me why you couldn't stay, you just left."
She brought her menu back up, hiding her face. "I am not speaking to you. Or Marie," she added as an afterthought.

Genevieve winced as the menu was snatched from her hand, putting them down in her lap quickly. This was going to be a long lunch.
“Samantha, I realize you’re upset, but could you please try and be reasonable?” Genevieve suggested tenderly. She felt like a kindergarten teacher. “Also, I think you should order something…chocolate?”

"She's not involved with my best mate!" He declared angrily, "And I left because I was in massive amounts of pain, okay?" He huffed and puffed, slightly red on the face. Samantha had a talent for getting everything wrong. Or he did. He wasn't entirely sure. "I want to, with you. I do. And maybe I can...things have been different. But not if you're going to be a brat."
Marie winced slightly from the safety of behind her menu. She hadn't really meant for things to get this out of hand. She was going to have to make it up to Sam big time.

Samantha nearly snarled at Genn before deciding that, yes, something sweet and brown and melt-in-your-mouth was just the thing she needed right now. She'd order an entire mountain of chocolate truffle.
She set the menu down again, though not nearly so violently this time. "Neither am I!" she hissed. "You... you ruined me for everyone!" She lowered her voice barely above a whisper. "I haven't had sex since you. Do you realize how rare that is for me?"
In the back of her mind, she felt vaguely bad for Marie and Genn, having to sit through this conversation, and anyone else in the restaurant that might overhear. But she was, quite frankly, far past caring.
"And what was I supposed to think? You've always thought I was a self-absorbed, spoiled brat, so you can see how I might think you regretted it and were, consequently, avoiding me."

She suddenly wished she had a menu to hide behind. This conversation had just taken a huge turn to the embarrassing. Genn sent Marie a sidelong glance over the table. Now, if they ditched, they’d look bad. Thanks a lot.

"Oh boo freaking who." He hissed, leaning forward on the table. "You were my first and you'll be my last. I tried to kill myself after that mess." He was tired of her thinking she had it so rough. That SHE was the jilted one.
Marie caught Genn's look and shrugged her shoulders softly. Okay, so she was going to have to make it up to the both of them.

She rolled her eyes. "Yes, I must commend myself for being sober for our torturous time apart," she replied nastily. His last, the thought made her feel giddy and warm until she realized "the last" had already happened, with no sign of a sequel. And, of course, the fact that she didn't believe a word of it. "Oh really?" she asked, throwing a glance at Marie. "It didn't appear to be all that difficult for you to perform."

David thrust his hand through his hair in frustration, pulling out quite a few strands in the process. "Only because of you, you idiot!" He kicked his chair out and stood up, stalked a few feet away from the table. He seemed to be stopped by an invisible wall, giving a loud aggravated noise before turning on his heel, pushing out Samantha's chair and gripped her shoulders.
"Don't you understand anything?" He asked and then leaned down to kiss her, harshly at first, but then his hand slid up to cradle her neck and he softened, if not in urgency.

Samantha jumped, startled, as he kicked her chair out, but it was nothing to the surprise she felt as his hands came roughly over her shoulders. He leaned close, so close, and she thought, Please kiss me, just before he did.
A complex frisson of fear, excitement and that toe-curling lust he was so good at enticing out of her skittered down her spine. She was still only a moment before she clutched onto him, one hand in his hair, the other around his neck, holding onto him as if letting go would leave her to drown.
