“Dad….?”
Jack glanced up, somewhat surprised, across the room at his usually wayward son. Alexander’s face puckered, though he made a pretty good effort at appearing nonchalant.
They were seated at the long dinner table, everyone else having came in and out, filtering through as they usually did. Jack was surprised Alexander had stuck around.
“Yes?” Jack asked, trying not to appear too suspicious.
“Er. Can I have my inheritance now?”
A beat passed, and then, “….what?”
“I want to move out.”
Jack absorbed this, keeping his face blank as he thought. Honestly, if any of his children were to move out, he would have picked Alexander first, but….he’d always thought it would have happened in a storm of rebellious rage, not a polite inquiry like this.
“Why?” he had to ask.
Alexander shrugged. “I just… I don’t know. I want to try it by myself for awhile, you know?”
“Okay,” Jack agreed softly, once the reality had time to sink in. Alexander was certainly an adult now, and both he and Pia had been on their own and living a lot rougher at a much younger age than their children. “The treasury is open… you can take what you need.”
“Thanks.”
He could think of nothing else to say, stunted further by his general confusion. “Umm… you might want to tell your mom and sister. They’d care to know if you’re moving out.”
“You’ll still see me all the time.” A hint of the old Alexander broke though as he rolled his eyes.
Jack smirked. “Even so.”
“Yeah, yeah.”
