The carriage dropped her off in front of Marie’s house, and Nellie took a deep breath, clutching her little wicker suitcase with her pajamas inside to her chest. She had never been in the actual city by herself before. And she was going to spend the night at some girl’s house that she didn’t know at all; she had met Marie twice, and each time she had been so different from the other, Nellie didn’t know what to expect. Hesitantly, she reached out and rapped her knuckles against the door, almost wishing no one would answer.

Marie had been expecting this, and so she'd prepared. And no one threw a sleep-over quite like Marie Antoinette. Her living room has been taken over by a large mattress, coated in many pillows and blankets. On low tables there was junk food, magazines, games and she'd even bought a set of brushes and makeup, since she didn't usually need those things.
When she swung open the door, she was already in her pajamas. She smiled wide at the frightened-looking shepherdess.
"Bonjour, Nellie! I am glad you came."

Nellie jumped a little when Marie threw the door open, but a big smile crept across her face. Something about the setting-- the snacks, the games, the giant mattress—something just screamed fun. Nellie loved fun. “Yer ‘ouse is real big and very pretty, Marie,” Nellie breathed, as she stepped into the foyer.
Suddenly, she grabbed Marie’s hands with a little bounce, “Thank you fer invitin’ me, I ‘ave never been t a sleepover before. You know? Only at me family’s or whatnot.”

Marie smiled down at the girl, hiding her faint distaste at the exuberance. It was all good and well to have fun, there was no need to act like a two year old while doing it. "Oh, do not mention eet. Eet will be fun to 'ave you. Come."
Not that Marie had a lot to say about acting mature behind the closed doors of her big and pretty house, what with all the incredibly childish rooms within. She was about to suggest the paint ball room, but something stopped her. Something wanted to keep that room to herself, since the last person to be in there with her had been Alexander. It didn't make much sense, but Nellie probably wasn't a good shot anyways.
"I 'ave got a lot of stuff we can do. There is a room you can bounce all around in wizzout getting 'urt, eff you like?"

“Wot?” She asked, obviously taken aback. “A wot kinda room? Why d’you ‘ave one of them?” Not that a bouncy room didn’t sound amazing, but Nellie was raised in the biggest house in her region, and the Peep household paled in comparison to this house, not to mention The Castle.
Placing her bag on the floor, Nellie looked around, obviously rather impressed, “Marie, wot you do fer a livin’?”

"For fun." She declared happily and looked around with Nellie. The girl had to be seeing something different, because all Marie saw was a hollow house. The moment Nellie's bag was on the floor, the ghost maid sprung from a wall, scooped the bag up and brought into the living room.
"Do? Like work?" Marie let out a small chuckle and shook her head, "Oh, nozzing. I throw parties and do whatevair. I 'ave fun for a living. Do you miss farming?" But she breezed past the question like she didn't expect an answer, or already knew it (who in the world would miss farming?), "Eef you go put on your pajamas, I can show you why I 'ave a bouncy room. Or zere is ze slide room..."

The ghost maid startled Nellie, who jumped a bit at the sight of her. The sight of a ghost didn’t actually scare her like she expected, though. Maybe living in a graveyard had started to immunize her to the fear of typical ‘scary’ things. Maybe she was getting Nightmare-ized.
She followed the maid and came back in her pajamas, a short nightgown printed with jumping sheep and a pair of shorts. Needless to say, it was one of the things Genevieve bought her, not what she brought from home. “’Ow does one get into the business of ‘avin’ fun fer a livin’? Sounds loik a good deal ta me.” Nellie bounced on the balls of her feet, also ignoring the farming question and waiting for Marie to lead her elsewhere.

"Well you're living wizz a Prince, ma cherie, I'm sure you know what it is like to not 'ave to worry about money."
That was one thing she didn't quite understand. They lived in such a cramped little space and yet Alex had to have control over quite a sum of money. Maybe the family didn't approve or whatever. Looking at the girl, she could hardly blame them. "Surely you're not having to work anymore?"

“O’ course I don’t,” Nellie dismissed, the curls of her ponytail bouncing wildly as she shook her head. Nellie had never in her life had to worry about money. She had frowned and pouted when her father told her profits were down that month from a bad harvest so she wouldn’t have her usual new-puzzle-allowance, but she never actually had to worry about it. Everyone else worried about it for her. “But y’know, I really loik workin’. Wot I did at least, it were fun. I were jus’ finkin, not everyone ‘as a job that’s fun, an’ so not everyone loiks workin’, and so you’re vurry lucky.”

"Mucking around wizz animals? Fun? You and Genn should get togethair, of course she never does any of ze gritty stuff. Eets not lady like." Her eyes shifted to Nellie and she felt maybe a little abashed. She shouldn't attack the poor girl at a sleepover, it was just so hard to be nice to the empty-headed thing.
"I am pretty lucky." She agreed with a smile, "But it's not like I didn't work for my money. I had to be nice to my uncle and manipulate him carefully for years to get him to leave his fortune to me."

“Bein’ ladylike ain’t all that fun anyhow,” Nellie admitted, “I’d much rather be girl-like. You can play with animals an ‘ in the flowers and roll in the fields an’ get grass stains, and it’s okay. Once you ‘ave ta worry all the time about bein a lady, the fun is gone.” Simple though she may be, Nellie had her priorities down.
With what may have been an eye-roll, Nellie snorted, “That sounds loik back breakin’ labor, it does.”

Marie had to admit when she wasn't around socialites, her friends, she liked to do those things too. She didn't even mind getting dirty like she said she did. There was a part of her that really wanted to hate Nellie, to find out she was villainous and completely wrong for Alexander. And while Marie still couldn't understand it, the girl was rather simple, she couldn't hate her for being stupid.
"It doesn't 'ave to be one or ze othair." She said, looping her arm through Nellie's and pulling her down the hallway and through one of the doors. It was the aforementioned bouncy room. So bouncy, in fact, it was hard to walk to the middle of the room---you had to leap.
"Okay!" Marie declared excitedly. This was so much more fun with someone else. "You go to one side." She picked up one of large foam lances and made her jumpy way to her side, "And we can joust!"

Nellie found the bouncy room to be right up her alley. At home, one of her favorite things to do was to skip and leap around the pasture, especially with the young lambs, so this room only served to accentuate her superior bouncing skills. She may be unable to spell above a third-grade level, but she leapt like she was part frog.
Obediently, Nellie hopped to the opposite corner and picked up her lance, “Joustin’?” She called across the room, “loik knights, yeah?”

"LIKE KNIGHTS." She affirmed in a battle-cry and charged. It was a silly, graceless advanced, her legs galloping forward awkwardly as they tried to keep her upright on the bouncy, infirm ground. Besides, keeping one's balance with a giant foam lance wasn't easy.
She didn't imagine that either of them would be able to remain upright, but that was the fun of it.

Nellie screamed in a mix of panic and excitement, pushing herself off the wall into a charge toward Marie. She didn’t make it too far, however, instead falling into a somersault onto her neck that looked like it would do some spinal damage. She hopped right up, though, her face all alit and giggly. Apparently, she was either unhurt or too happy to care. “Oh, Marie this is lovely! Again?!”
