Marie rounded on him, slapped him square across the jaw and then without really thinking, she opened the nearest door and ducked into what appeared to be a large linen closet. Embarrassed that it wasn't a door to immediate escape and that she had hit him in the first place, Marie wanted to stay in the closet that had nicely enough lit up for her when she'd entered it, forever.
She couldn't really say why she'd hit him. Maybe for not being all that sorry, or for not checking up on her, or not caring as much as she did, or the fact that she cared at all, maybe for the fact that he didn't sweep her into his arms and comfort her like he surely would've done for Nellie.
Maybe she did know why she'd hit him, but if she was honest she had to say he didn't deserve it. He didn't have to care back, or be who she wanted him to be. And even though she realized this, she still wasn't coming out of the closet until he left.

Alexander reeled back, more out of surprise than the actual force of her blow, his fingers flying up to touch his stinging cheek.
He looked at the closed door of the closet, half amused, half ticked off. What-- was she just going to stay in there, pretending like she'd stormed off?
A slap was more Marie's style, and oddly, the brief exchange left him feeling more comfortable. He went to the door, knocking once.
"C'mon Marie. You can't stay in the closet."

Marie was clutching hard at the handle because linen closets didn't often have the feature of locking from the inside and she was pretty sure royal bedsheets weren't going to help jam the door any. She felt stupid for being in here, but even more stupid would be to come out, like a child caught in a ridiculous lie they kept on denying they'd made, even when they knew the jig was up.
Oddly, she felt panicked, trapped, and so she remained silent, waiting for him to give up and go downstairs and then she could just sneak into the foyer and back into the conversation like nothing at all had happened.

He rolled his eyes (rather exaggeratedly, even though she couldn't see him).
"Alright, fine," he said, "Stay in the closet if it makes you feel better. It's not like I couldn't just open the door if I wanted to. If you feel like being a grown up when you come out, please let me know."
And with that, he backed off the door and loudly walked away, only to pause and wait once he rounded the corner.

Marie listened carefully, and then peeked out the door, it was clear. She slipped outside and headed down the hallway, moving quickly to avoid being spotted before she got back to her human.
When she went around the corner she stopped abruptly and looked to the side, and there, of course, was Alexander. She flushed again for being so easily duped and decided to simply tilt her chin at him and continue past him.

Alexander grinned, not making any attempt to soften the smug plastered all over it, trailing just slightly behind her with his hands in his pockets.
After a moment, he oh-so-nonchalantly cleared his throat.

Marie whirled around, almost prepared to slap him again. She was so frustrated with him, and herself, and this whole mess that maybe it would've been in her best interests to just leave it be, forget him, and find some other, cuter boy who was willing.
"What? What is eet? Why can't you leave me alone now? You were oh so good at eet before."

"Sorry," he said, sounding anything but. His eyes creased and the orange color glittered as he leaned in by her face. "You're just so fun to annoy."

Marie gave a noise of incoherent disgust and flung her hands up expressively. "I am glad to amuse you, but forgive me if zis isn't my mission in life." She tried to pick up her pace and had to stop because she honestly didn't have the energy, even with the little shot of fear from her human.
"Look, I didn't even come 'ere for you." She passed off her stopping as wanting to speak with him, and her lie (since she just hadn't accidentally ended up in his room).
