Getting somebody to play with you: This is the part that most people have trouble with. And it can be difficult, being a new person in the thread, trying to get someone to play with you. There are various methods of getting play, which are provided here in handy-dandy list form.
* Soloing - this is when you just play by yourself, and hope someone gets interested enough to join you. This works best in rooms that have a common meeting place or setting, like a bar or a mall or . . . whatever. Your character enters, and you generally make it known that he's open to interaction with anybody who wants to play. You're more likely to get play if somebody finds you amusing or interesting than if your character walks in quietly, orders a drink, and sits at the table in the corner not talking to anybody.
* Asking OOC - when used in moderation, this can be an effective technique. You basically ask somebody who's not currently involved in play if they want to RP with you. Have a character ready - lots of people will go "Oh, sure! Who do you want?" The proper response to this is whip out your character and say "Whoever you think will be compatible with him/her/it/them." Only do this once, as repeatedly asking will annoy the hell out of people, which isn't going to get you RP. And if no one responds to your question, do you whine about how everybody in the room is an unfriendly bitch who won't help a newbie? No, bad newbie! No cookie for you! In that case, just shrug it off and start soloing.
* Joining an in-progress RP - this can be a little iffy, sometimes. But if you see an RP going on that you find to be really interesting and wanna get a hand in, you can have your character sort of wander over there. Do not, however, just barge on in to someone's RP unless they've already said that outside interference is welcome. Sometimes people are RPing set storylines and don't want to be interrupted. Also, make sure that the characters involved are in the same place as your character.
* Starting an RP yourself - sometimes you just gotta take the bull by the horns. If you see somebody soloing, make your character approach them.
