Nightmares and Dreams obviously don’t get along. This resulted in hundreds of years of continual warfare, deeply ingrained prejudice, and a lot of bad PR on both sides. The constant conflict came to a head under the reign of Nightmare King Jack Ira, who is half-Dream and half-Nightmare. Though at first wildly unpopular for his hostile take-over of the realm of Nightmares from Nightmare Queen Atropia Belladonna, an act which resulted in multiple rebellions, he eventually won back some measure of trust, as he married Atropia (Pia) and gave her back her crown.
Jack also managed to come to an agreement with the main leader of the rebellion, Julien de Sang. Thus, with the support of most nightmares behind him, Jack invaded Dreamland. With the help of ‘the Jewel of Ages’, a strange stone with mystical powers, passed down from king to king, Jack crushed the Dream force and united the two kingdoms.
At the moment, everything exists in a state of tentative peace, maintained mostly by a lack of contact between your average Dream and your average Nightmare. The two old realms are united in name only, and the Dreams are ever eager to regain their independence.
