They came laden with candy and news about the Peep family. And while she'd kept if from Mikhail, the realization that Marie was not really going to try and send Nellie back home, but that she genuinely hoped it would make Nellie feel better.
She was going to kill Genn.
Marie knocked on the crypt door, bright smile in place.

Nellie thought she looked pretty sharp. She and Alexander were going up to The Castle for dinner later, and she always made a special effort to look presentable when they went to the big family dinners. She wore a navy-and-white striped dress that Genevieve bought her. The darker color made her feel very grown-up, and the cut was very flattering. But when she looked in the mirror, something was wrong.
She had no flowers in her hair.
So, she sent Alexander out to get her one.
She assumed the knock on the door was Alexander (maybe he forgot his key), and she excitedly pulled the door open to face—Marie? And some fellow she didn’t know.
Now, Nellie wasn’t all that quick on the uptake, but she hadn’t exactly gotten good vibes from Marie the last time they’d met. She quirked her brow and tried not to look too suspicious. “Yes?”

Mikhail remained just behind Marie, hoping to allow her to take the reigns, at least at first. Because, really. They lived in a crypt? What sort of people, honestly?
He gave Nellie a once-over as she opened the door. Oh dear, what on earth was this little creature? And what was she wearing? And more importantly, how had she managed to seduce Alexander over Marie?

Marie smiled at Nellie. She didn't know how to be sincere, but she'd try. There was a certain amount of jealousy when she thought of her and Alexander living in the cozy crypt, but she pushed it aside.
"I feel bad for ze way I 'ave treated you." She said, hoping Mikhail would think it was all an act. It would be horrible if he figured out she was being genuine.
"So we brought you zome candy, fresh from Peep Farms! Zought you'd be missing 'ome. I know I would. We brought news about your family too, eef you want to 'ear it."

He could really only hope that it was an act. Otherwise, Marie would have to be completely off her rocker. Really, what was it about love that made all these poor women go completely mad? He'd never understand it.
At least there was candy to be had. And perhaps, once Marie got a hold of Alexander, she would get back to herself again.
"Mikhail Ilyin." He said lightly, offering a hand, if just slightly hesitantly, to Nellie.

Nellie was not good at hiding her shock. She didn’t know Marie could feel bad. Her shock was even greater when the name “Peep Farms” came up. The candy was great—it used to be a large branch of her diet, and now it was cut out completely—but it was the mention of news from home that really whet her appetite.
She shook Mikhail’s hand with no small amount of distraction, “Nellie Peep. Do ya wanta come inside, then?”
Really, there was not enough room for three people to be in one part of the crypt at one time, but they’d make do. Nellie indicated for Mikhail and Marie to have a seat at the tiny two-person dinner table after she shooed the little white kitten away from underneath. She didn’t really want to seem pushy, but she was really excited to hear about the farm, yet was somehow dreading the information. What if someone was sick or dying and she couldn’t go over to help?
“Is everyone doing okay? Didja speak to me mum?” Nellie asked Marie, standing nervously in the doorway and ringing her hands.

Mikhail followed Nellie into the crypt hesitantly, wiping his hand delicately on his pants while she wasn't looking. Oh God, people lived here?! There wasn't even enough space to breathe!
He took a seat rather carefully at the table when Nellie offered, sparing a few moments to scratch the cat lightly behind the ears. And Alexander was supposed to stay here? Why would a Prince stay in a place like this?
"I...I love what you're done with the place." He tried, smiling thinly.

Marie lifted a large, large bag of assorted candy and opened it on the small table, closing her eyes as various delicious scents wafted upwards and filled the tiny space. She tried to recall which of the similar looking older women had called herself Nellie's mom.
"OH! She's fine. Zey are all fine." She paused, gauging Nellie's reaction, "Zey were all wearing black. It brought out zere complexions very nicely! And ze one you were zupposed to marry? 'Ee ended up wiz your cousin and she's already expecting."

Nellie could already feel herself choking up. She had hoped that they’d kind of been over her by now, at least dropped the mourning gear. Apparently, they had been more attached to her than she had anticipated. Well, at least Peter wasn’t.
“Peter? I s’pose they ‘ad the chapel booked already, an’ didunt wanna put the appointment t’ waste, ya fink so? ‘Ow nice for them, though.” Nellie’s voice cracked a bit. She didn’t know why that bothered her. She hadn’t even liked Peter. “’Ow about everythin’ else? ‘Ave you any idea ‘oo’s watchin the sheep?” Her poor, four-legged babies. No one else at Peep Farms would dote on them like she did.
A thought suddenly hit Nellie (a rare occurrence), and her heart just about stopped beating. “You didunt tell ‘em I woz okay, I woz ‘ere, didja?”

"Oh, darling, of course not!" Mikhail cooed immediately, "No, no, we know your situation is rather delicate, hmm? Wouldn't want to make anything messy." He assured her, setting one hand briefly on her arm.
Well, at least, Marie wouldn't want to make anything messy. He had to hold himself back from sighing.

Marie shook her head. "No, no. We were careful of zat. Do not worry. Ze cousin Petair married is looking aftair ze sheep, but zey had a bout of cavities and ze flock is a touch smallair zen eet used to be." Or so the lady who wouldn't have shutup for the King of France had said.
"But zey recovered, and ze farm ee's doing well. And your brothair 'ad anothair daughter and named her Felicity and she's very cute, if a leetle on zey chubby side, I'm sure she'll slim down!"

Alexander opened the door, calling, "Nelllllieee..." in a fake, sing-song voice. He shuffled the assortment of flowers he carried into one arm, trying to shut the door with his foot.
"So I went to the flower shop and the lady had to give me the frickin' history on every single flower to have ever bloomed in the Isle of Morpheus, and the line was about one hundred people long, and all the sales girl was thinking about was the sales boy over at the jewelry stand, and the old Dream at the front was sifting through her purse looking for the exact change, like she was going to win some kind of exact change award--- Hey Killer!"
He paused in his rant to hold out a foot for the enthusiastic white kitten to jump on. Killer scurried up his leg, waist and chest with grace (this was a well practiced ritual) and Alexander continued. "Anyway, I hope you like these flowers, because I stole them."
He glanced up and finally noticed Marie and Mikhail sitting there. Killer curled up on his head and hissed and attacked the more wild pieces of his hair. He blinked once and said, intelligently, "Oh."
Killer took a fiesty swipe and toppled off his head, and his arm instinctively reached out and caught the little kitten in his hand. "Well, well," he said finally, offering Mikhail and Marie a vague grin. "To what do we owe the pleasure?"

Nellie’s concern for the sheep was evident. She had literally helped birth several of them. “Zeke ‘ad another daughter? ‘Ee’s goin to be payin’ dowries for the rest of ‘is life.” She was trying to joke around to make herself feel better, but it really only made her feel worse. Everything was going on without her. Tears gathered in the corners of her eyes.
When she heard Alexander coming, she turned quickly away to wipe the tears away. She took the flowers from him with a cheerful smile, “Fank you, they’re lovely,” and stolen, even better.
“Marie and…” Nellie was not listening when Mikhail gave his name, “her friend brought me some candy from home...” her voice cracked a little at the word ‘home’, but she tried to cover it up with a sunny smile.

"Alexander, it's good to see you." Mikhail cooed, pleased to see another noble face, despite Alexander's strange preoccupation with the strange sheep-girl, "Still working on icing your little present." He added, as he tilted his head to the side and gave the hickey a small tap with his index finger. Nellie was already feeling off-center, he could tell, and it would hardly hurt to give her the tiniest push.
"I wasn't aware you were into petty thievery, mm?" He joked. He shoot Marie a small, bemused glance as he did, half to bring the joke to her, and half simply to gauge her reaction at the other man's entrance. He could only hope it wouldn't be quite as doe-eyed as he imagined it could be.

The surge of jealousy was surprising, but she smashed it down with the expertise of a woman who had been trained to be nothing but happy, constantly. Besides, Nellie looked like she was about to cry.
"I'm zorry! I didn't mean to upset you. I zought it would 'elp." She stood and tottered over to Nellie slowly as to not set her ribs screaming. She touched the other girl's cheeks, and then pulled her into a very ginger hug.
"I know 'ow you feel. Anytime, you can come to my 'ouse and we will 'ave a sleepover." She figured Nellie would be enthralled by that kind of idea. "We will braid eachother's 'air, and play games. All girls need to get away from zere boys once in a while."
She really didn't understand how she actually meant what she was saying, but she did. She looked up and was about to smile at Alexander when Mikhail dropped his comment about the hickey.
"Oh shut up you big fag. No one cares." She loved Mikhail dearly. Sometimes, he could be a pain in the ass.
